Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is a small wildlife reserve located at Pabitora in Morigaon district of Assam. It is situated in the floodplains of the mighty Brahmaputra River.Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is known for high one-horned rhinoceros density. The sanctuary covers an area of 38.83 sq kms out of which 16 sq kms is inhabited by the one-horned rhinos. It was declared as reserve forest in 1971 and eventually got the wildlife sanctuary status in 1987.The sanctuary is divided into three distinct categories: forest, grassland and water bodies or beels.

Wildlife at Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary

Besides being a natural home to One Horned Rhinoceros, the sanctuary shelters variety of animals. Pobitora is home to a variety of other animals like leopard, wild boar, barking deer and wild buffalo and about 275 species of birds and various reptiles species as well. Several species of reptiles can be spotted in the sanctuary. The sanctuary also serves as a temporary home to the beautiful migratory birds. Around 2000 migratory birds have been reported in the sanctuary. The sanctuary has good population of One horned rhinoceros..

Activities:

Elephant safari and jeep safaris are the major activities at Pobitora wildlife sanctuary. The entrance of the sanctuary is from the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary Forest Range Office, Raja Mayang.

Timing:

Pobitora is open for visitors throughout the year, but the best time to visit is between November and March.

Jeep Safari Timings: 6.30 AM & 3 PM
Elephant Safari Timings: 6.30 AM / 7.30 AM & 2.30 PM

How to reach:

Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is only at a distance of about 48 kms from Guwahati, which is well-connected by air, rail and road by other major cities of India.

Flights are offered for Guwahati from all major residential airports in India. From there, you can hire a cab till Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary.

The nearest railhead is at Jagiroad which is well connected to Guwahati. From Jagiroad, you can take public buses or a cab and reach Pobitora .
