Nongriat Double Decker Root Bridge: Meghalaya Tour

The Double Decker root bridge is located in nongriat village in East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya.It gained a lot of popularity among travellers in the last few decades.This 20-meter long bridge is probably the only bridge in the region with two decks.. This area is famous for root bridges made of Indian Rubber Tree, but the Double Decker Bridge is the most famous of all due to its large size. It is 3 kilometers long and placed at a height of 2400 feet.The Umshiang River flows beneath the bridge.These bridges were created by the local Khasi people, who have been weaving the aerial roots of banyan trees on opposite sides of streams and gorges for centuries, by hand. They are known as living because their roots keep growing.
How to reach
The only method to reach the ideal destination is a walkthrough the jungle .To reach Double Decker Root bridge ,you have to go Tyrna village first which is located at a distance of about 20-30 minutes drive from Cherrapunjee.The trekking is initiated from Tyrna village. The trekking is all throughout a descending journey from Tyrna village with a step count of about 3000 steps one-way. This trek takes nothing less than 4-5 hours for a return journey. It takes a whole day to completely witness the beauty the place has to offer.
Best time to visit
The best time to visit Double Decker Rooyt bridge is between October and February.Since the weather remains extremely pleasant during these months and the trek to Double Decker Root Bridge becomes a bit easier. Early summer between March and May is also a good time to visit.As in the monsoon season, the path becomes very slippery and at times the rainfall is so heavy that you won’t be able to walk ahead.
Entry Charges
You need to pay a fee of INR 20 per head for adult(for Children 10/-) just before crossing the double-decker root bridge. Professional video cameras are charged an extra INR 1000, and normal cameras only INR 20.

There are not many staying options in the village. There are very few home-stays at Nongriat which provide basic accommodation and food.However, Cherrapunjee ,Shillong offers better options.Shillong and Cherrapunjee have a number of hotels of various budgets. You will also find homestays and hostels in Shillong. Homestays are also available in Cherrapunjee.
