Majuli: The largest river island

Majuli island of Assam State is the largest river island in the world, located through River Bramhaputra. The island occupies a vast 352 sq km area.It attracts tourists from all over the world.In 2016 it became the first island to be made a district in India.Majuli, is blessed with unparalleled beauty and a rich culture that will surprise you on your first visit.
How to reach
Majuli is a river island that can only be reached by ferry. The ferries plying from Neemati Ghat nearby Jorhat takes nearly 45mins to arrive at Majuli. Visitors arriving at the Guwahati International Airport will need around seven hours to reach Jorhat, from where they will take a ferry from Nimati Ghat to reach Majuli Island.
The nearest town to this island is Jorhat, which is well connected by bus, train and even has an airport.

Visit Neo-Vaishnavite satras
Majuli is also the cultural capital of Assam and famous for Satras. It is a unique feature of Vaishnavism in Assam, established by Sankardeva, the father of Assamese culture. .If you want to experience the Assamese culture at its best, visit Majuli Island. About 22 Satras (Hindu Neo-Vaishnavite monasteries) in Majuli.Auniati Satra, Garmur Satra,Dakhinpaat satra,Uttar Kamalabari satra etc are famous satras of Majuli.
Mask Making Traditions
Majuli is home to the traditional art of mask making.Notun Samaguri Satra is famous for mask making culture, which was dedicated to making eco-friendly masks of Hindu mythological figures like Ravana, Hanuman, and more.There were colourful small and large-sized masks in the satra.

Another must visited places of Majuli is Salmora village which is known as Pottery village. It seems strange that they make pot without the help of a potter’s wheel. Surely, such art of pottery is a unique heritage of Majuli.
Traditional Mishing Villages of Majuli
Visiting Mising tribe’s village is must if you are in Majuli. If you like colourful garments you can also buy a traditional Mekhala Sador from one of the Mising women there.
