Day by day

  1. Day 1Guwahati - Ziro

The long haul to Ziro — ten or eleven hours by road, or fly to Lilabari and drive the last three or four. The valley opens out flat and green between pine ridges, and it is worth the journey. Overnight in Ziro.

  2. Day 2Apatani Village Tour

Hong and Hija, two of the larger Apatani villages, built in bamboo and thatch along tight lanes. Time with the Apatani community, whose tattoo and nose-plug traditions belong to the older generation and are theirs to explain, not ours. Overnight in Ziro.

  3. Day 3Talley Valley & Nature Walks

Out to Talley Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, and walking through silver fir and pine forest for the rest of it — quiet enough that you hear the trees. Overnight in Ziro.

  4. Day 4Local Markets & Leisure

Craft markets, bamboo workshops where everything from baskets to houses starts, and a day with nothing much in it at all. Overnight in Ziro.

  5. Day 5Departure

The drive back to Guwahati, or out from Lilabari airport.
