Day by day

  1. Day 1Guwahati to Bhalukpong/Tezpur

    Out of Guwahati towards the Arunachal border, the Brahmaputra plain running flat and green until the hills start. Inner Line Permit formalities handled on the way.

  2. Day 2Bhalukpong to Dirang

    A beautiful drive up to Dirang through pine and cloud, stopping at Bomdila where the monastery sits high above a valley that runs away for miles.

  3. Day 3Dirang to Tawang via Sela Pass

    Over Sela Pass — high, open, snow at the margins, prayer flags cracking in the wind — and past the Jaswant Garh War Memorial on the descent into Tawang.

  4. Day 4Tawang Sightseeing

    Tawang Monastery, its courtyard hanging above a valley that drops for miles; the War Memorial below; and Madhuri Lake, still and cold between bare mountains with dead trees standing in the shallows.

  5. Day 5Tawang to Dirang

    Back down over Sela to Dirang, the road looking entirely different in the other direction.

  6. Day 6Dirang to Guwahati, Departure

    The long drive to Guwahati for onward departure.
