Day by day

1. Day 1Arrive Zurich

   Into Zurich, to the hotel, and an evening to yourself along the river and the old town lanes behind it.

2. Day 2Lucerne

   Lucerne for the day — the Chapel Bridge crossing the Reuss in dark timber with painted panels under its roof, the Lion Monument carved into the rock face above town, and the cable car up Mount Titlis if you want the height and the glacier at the top of it.

3. Day 3Interlaken

   On to Interlaken by rail or road, through a landscape that starts looking staged. The town sits on the flat between two lakes with the Jungfrau massif filling the end of the valley.

4. Day 4Jungfraujoch Excursion

   The full day up to Jungfraujoch by cogwheel train, tunnelling through the Eiger to the highest railway station in Europe. Ice, snow and thin air at the top, and the Aletsch Glacier running away below.

5. Day 5Zermatt & Matterhorn

   Across to Zermatt — a car-free town at the end of its valley — where the Matterhorn stands over everything and does to everyone exactly what you have been told it does.

6. Day 6Geneva

   Geneva to finish: the Jet d'Eau throwing water a hundred and forty metres into the air off the lakefront, and a long walk along the promenade.

7. Day 7Departure

   Transfer to the airport for the flight home.
