Day by day

  1. Day 1Gangtok - Lachen

Gangtok north to Lachen, following the Teesta up a valley that narrows and steepens the whole way, past the Seven Sisters Waterfall dropping straight off the roadside cliff. Permit required, and handled. Overnight in Lachen.

  2. Day 2Lachen - Gurudongmar Lake - Lachung

An early start — very early — for Gurudongmar, a lake at over 17,000 feet held in bare rock and thin air, part of it said never to freeze. Weather and permit willing, and neither is guaranteed at that height. Then down and across to Lachung. Overnight in Lachung.

  3. Day 3Yumthang Valley - Zero Point

A full day in Yumthang, the Valley of Flowers, where the river runs through open meadow between snow peaks and rhododendrons cover the slopes in season. Up to Zero Point if the snow allows, where the road simply ends. Then the long road back to Gangtok. Overnight in Gangtok.
