Day by day

  1. Day 1Arrive Kathmandu

Pashupatinath on the Bagmati, where cremations take place openly on the ghats, and Boudhanath, its great white dome ringed by pilgrims walking clockwise beneath the painted eyes.

  2. Day 2Kathmandu Sightseeing

Durbar Square, all pagoda roofs and old palace courtyards, then Swayambhunath above it for the view back across the valley.

  3. Day 3Drive to Pokhara

West to Pokhara under the Annapurnas, and out on Phewa Lake with the mountains in the water.

  4. Day 4Pokhara Sightseeing

Sunrise at Sarangkot as the range comes out of the dark, then Davis Falls where the river drops into the rock and disappears.

  5. Day 5Pokhara to Chitwan

South out of the hills to Chitwan, where the land flattens into sal forest and grassland. A Tharu cultural programme in the evening — stick dances, by firelight.

  6. Day 6Chitwan Jungle Safari

Jeep and canoe safaris through Chitwan, looking for rhino, deer and birdlife. The canoe is a dugout and moves in silence, which is exactly why it works.
