Day by day

1. Day 1Guwahati to Shillong

   The climb out of Guwahati into Meghalaya, the plains dropping away and the air cooling with every mile. Some local sightseeing in Shillong, and a room for the night.

2. Day 2Cherrapunjee Sightseeing

   Cherrapunjee properly: Nohkalikai falling in one long plunge into a pool the colour of jade, Mawsmai Cave lit and walkable through the limestone, the Seven Sisters across the valley, and the Eco Park on the cliff edge looking out over Bangladesh.

3. Day 3Living Root Bridge Trek

   The trek to the Double Decker Living Root Bridge at Nongriat — around 3,500 steps down through wet forest and every one of them back up again. At the bottom, two tiers of bridge grown from the living roots of rubber trees, trained across the stream over generations and still growing stronger. Moderate, and the thing you will talk about afterwards.

4. Day 4Dawki & Mawlynnong

   Boating on the Umngot at Dawki, where the water runs so clear that the boat appears to float above its own shadow on the riverbed. Then Mawlynnong — kept immaculate by the village itself — and its own living root bridge.

5. Day 5Return to Guwahati, Departure

   The drive back down to Guwahati for onward departure.
