Day by day

  1. Day 1Guwahati - Kohima

Seven or eight hours from Guwahati, the plains giving way to Naga hills and villages built along the ridgelines. An evening in Kohima with nothing asked of you. Overnight in Kohima.

  2. Day 2Hornbill Festival - Day 1

A full day at Kisama. Every Naga tribe keeps its own morung here — a carved longhouse in its own style — and during the festival each one is alive with song, dance, log drums and rice beer. The food stalls alone are worth working through slowly. Overnight in Kohima.

  3. Day 3Hornbill Festival - Day 2

Back for the parts you missed. Different morungs, craft stalls, weaving and woodwork, and performances that run all day. A festival built to keep seventeen tribes' traditions in the open rather than in a museum. Overnight in Kohima.

  4. Day 4Kohima City & War Cemetery

The War Cemetery, terraced up the hillside above the town with a headstone for each man who died holding this ridge in 1944, and the quiet of it after three days of drums. Then the Heritage Village and the local market. Overnight in Kohima.

  5. Day 5Departure

The drive back to Guwahati for onward travel.
