Day by day

1. Day 1Arrive Dubai

   Land in Dubai and go straight out on the water — a dhow cruise through the Marina with dinner aboard, towers lit on both sides and the whole city showing off before you have unpacked.

2. Day 2Dubai City Tour

   Up the Burj Khalifa to At the Top, where the city becomes a diagram and the desert starts somewhere past the edge of it. The Dubai Mall for as long as you can stand. Then the Fountain show after dark, which is free and better than it has any right to be.

3. Day 3Desert Safari

   Out into the desert: dune bashing across the red sand, a camel ride at the quiet end of the afternoon, and a BBQ dinner at camp with live entertainment once the light has gone and the temperature with it.

4. Day 4Abu Dhabi Day Trip

   A day in Abu Dhabi for the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque — white marble, inlaid flowers, and the largest hand-knotted carpet in the world under one roof. Then Ferrari World, or whatever else on Yas Island appeals.

5. Day 5Departure

   Transfer to the airport for the flight home.
