Day by day

1. Day 1Arrive Guwahati

   Met at the airport or station, then Kamakhya Temple on its hill and Umananda out on its island in the middle of the Brahmaputra. The evening is yours by the river, which is a mile wide here and moves like something with somewhere to be.

2. Day 2Guwahati to Kaziranga

   Four or five hours east to Kaziranga, tea gardens most of the way. Check in, and a cultural show at the resort in the evening — Bihu, drums, dancers who have been doing this since they could walk.

3. Day 3Kaziranga Safaris

   Elephant safari at first light through the central range, moving quietly above grass that stands taller than a person, with the mist still sitting on it. In the afternoon, a jeep through the western range — rhino, elephant and birds, in a park that holds more one-horned rhino than anywhere on earth.

4. Day 4Kaziranga Orchid Park & Departure

   The Orchid & Bio-diversity Park, with hundreds of native orchid species under one roof, and the cultural centre beside it. Then the road back to Guwahati for onward travel.
