Day by day

  1. Day 1Guwahati to Bhalukpong/Tezpur

Out of Guwahati and north, the Brahmaputra plain running flat and green until the hills begin. Permit formalities at the Arunachal border are handled for you, and then the road starts to climb.

  2. Day 2Bhalukpong to Dirang

The road to Dirang, tightening through pine and cloud, with Bomdila on the way — a monastery set high above the valley where the prayer flags do most of the talking. By evening you are in Dirang, where the air is thin enough to notice.

  3. Day 3Dirang to Tawang via Sela Pass

The big one. Sela Pass sits high and open, snow at the edges for much of the year, prayer flags snapping in wind that comes from nowhere — then the long descent into Tawang on the other side.

  4. Day 4Tawang Sightseeing

Tawang in full: the monastery, one of the great ones, its courtyard opening onto a valley that drops away for miles. The War Memorial below it. Madhuri Lake, still and cold, held between bare mountains.

  5. Day 5Tawang to Dirang

Back down to Dirang, over the same pass. Nobody minds — the road looks like a different road entirely when you drive it the other way.

  6. Day 6Dirang to Ziro Valley

A long day to Ziro, dropping out of the high mountains into a valley that feels like it belongs to a gentler country altogether. Settle in; the drive is part of it.

  7. Day 7Ziro Valley Exploration

Ziro at walking pace. Apatani villages of bamboo and thatch, pine ridges above them, and the rice fields where fish are farmed in the same flooded paddies — a system worked out here long before anyone came to admire it.

  8. Day 8Ziro to Guwahati (via North Lakhimpur)

The road back towards Assam by way of North Lakhimpur, the mountains releasing you slowly into the plains.

  9. Day 9Departure

    Onward from Guwahati.
